The African Union of the Blind, AFUB Joins the Second Anniversary on Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs
The 25th September 2017 marks 2 years since the Adoption of the 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The SDGs build on the principle of “leaving no one behind” by transforming the world. This new Agenda emphasizes a holistic approach to achieving sustainable development for all.
Although, the word “disability” is not cited directly in all goals, disability is referenced in some of the goals of the SDGs, specifically in the goals referring to education, growth and employment, inequality, accessibility of human settlements, as well as data collection and monitoring of the SDGs.
The 17 goals to ‘transform our world’ are: 1) No Poverty; 2) Zero hunger; 3) Good Health and Well-being; 4) Quality Education; 5) Gender Equality; 6) Clean Water and Sanitation; 7) Affordable and Clean Energy; 8) Decent Work and Economic Growth; 9) Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; 10) Reduced Inequality; 11)Sustainable Cities and Communities; 12) Responsible Consumption and Production; 13)Climate Action; 14) Life Below Water; 15) Life on Land; 16) Peace and Justice Strong Institutions; 17) Partnerships to achieve the Goal
Working towards achieving our goal of a continent where blind and partially sighted persons enjoy equal rights, social inclusion and full participation in development, we will as part of our mission and strategic objective build the capacity of our beneficiary national members to advocate for inclusive implementation of Sustainable Development Goals, (SDGs) in their countries by demonstrating their participation in campaigning for disability inclusive SDGs in their countries.
On this day when we mark 2 years since the adoption of the SDGs, the African Union of the Blind, AFUB calls on African countries to implement this 2030 disability inclusive agenda in their respective countries throughout its remaining 13 years lifespan. On 25th September, we will be joining Action for SDGs #Act4SDGs and the SDGs Kenya Forum to move forward implementation of the SDGs in Kenya (where the AFUB Secretariat is based) and of course on behalf of our Member Organizations in 53 countries across the continent.
