The Malian Union of the Blind (UMAV), one of the most active organizations in the region, was very instrumental in the creation of AFUB.

West Africa Zone 2 is yet another poor region with most of its countries belonging to the least developed countries in the world. This hasn't precluded our visually impaired fellows from establishing and maintaining vibrant organizations, namely the Association for the Advancement and Social Inclusion of the Blind and Partially Sighted of Benin (APISAAB), the National Union of the Associations for the Advancement of the Blind and Partially Sighted of Burkina Faso (UN-ABPAM), and the Malian Union of the Blind (UMAV), which was founded by Ismail Konaté, AFUB founder and first President.

AFUB has implemented/is currently implementing a wide range of projects in Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Togo, and Niger.

Boniface Gnonlonfoun, the president of the organization in Benin, is the youngest AFUB board member, West Africa Zone 2 Regional Officer. Mrs. Marie Madeleine Kabore is the AFUB Women's Representative for this region.
