AFUB offices, Embakasi, Nairobi

Visiting our offices in Nairobi, amid the industrial sheds of Embakasi, and meeting the handful of staff working at AFUB, you won't probably realise the remarkable reach that AFUB has had –and continues to have- through our projects and activities throughout Africa!

Yes! Each project we have implemented -are still implementing- has success stories to showcase as we strive to realise our vision of an Africa where we get to enjoy equal rights, social inclusion, and full participation in development!

And yes! We are still miles away from getting there! Do we need to point out that the challenges are immense; that the need for scaling up our projects and programmes is deeply felt; that empowerment is still a buzz word that has yet to translate into tangible improvements in the lives of visually impaired persons?

At AFUB, We recognise the challenges but most importantly the opportunities and strive to tap into the potential of our committed staff and members, backed with the trust of our partners and supporters!

Testimonies of:

Sarah, a woman leader from Nigeria;

Loice, a youth leader from Kenya;

Catherine, a peer educator and founder of a community-based organisation of visually impaired persons living with HIV/AIDS;

And Omar from Rwanda, an alumnus of our youth empowerment training project (KDDP) having recently graduated from the International Institute for Social Entrepreneurs in India, and founder of the Uwezo Empowerment Centre for the Blind.

Droits de l'homme

Education and Braille Literacy

English

Our Pilot project in education is making significant inroads.

There are an estimated 300,000 blind children in Africa; only 2 percent of whom are able to access schools. Of those who access education, the majority have to leave their families and communities and live in boarding schools of the blind.

Equally empowered!

English

The World Vision Report on Disability and Inclusion reveals that out of 16 African countries surveyed, only 6 African countries mention inclusion strongly and explicitly in their Education Programme Development plans; 8 countries make some mention of inclusion in and 2 make no mention at all.

Habilités de la même façon !

French

HIV/AIDS

English

HIV&AIDS does not discriminate. It affects all humanity as a whole. Many programs have been initiated to fight the pandemic but visually impaired persons are for the most left out of such programmes and campaigns.

JEUNES LEADERS EN ACTION
