Think of yourself in a blindfold from morning till evening. Imagine not being able to see the sun rise, for just a day; morning comes and goes, yet bringing no daylight. Imagine you cannot freely move because you are unsure where to direct your next step over the fear of knocking on objects and hurting yourself.
Envision having to live this kind of life depending on someone to take you almost everywhere and to do very nearly everything for you! For persons who are blind, this means a world of darkness for the rest of their lives Millions of blind and partially sighted persons on the continent experience this on a daily basis throughout their lives. We work to provide independence and vision beyond sight to blind and partially sighted persons in Africa.
There are 1.2 billion people on the African continent. It is estimated that 8 million of them are blind and over 24 million have significant low vision conditions that cannot be corrected, cured or treated by conventional refraction, medicine or surgery.
Numbers continue to show that more than 90% of blind and partially sighted persons from the continent do not have an education or a decent employment resulting to reduced access to opportunity in society. It is astounding that only a small number – less than 4 million – are able to feed themselves and their families or they are a burden, having to depend on highly likely poorer families and a straining and overstretched society caused by the continuous vicious cycle of disability and poverty.
To change this situation, the African Union of the Blind (AFUB) works to help blind and partially sighted people in Africa to live independent and self-reliant lives through capacity building and advocacy in partnership with governments, international agencies and other stakeholders. Over the years, we have touched the lives of millions of people in the 53 countries where we work and we are tirelessly soldiering on.
With your support we will be able to touch many more persons who are blind and partially sighted in the continent and give them the gift of independence.
Support us more, because together we can touch more!
